Andros protests trash dump on ancient site

Residents of Andros yesterday held a protest outside a landfill on the Cycladic island that has been ordered to shut down because it is located within an archaeological site. Locals have been trying for the last few years to force the landfill to close and a recent decision by the Culture Ministry ordered the dumping of rubbish at the site to stop by the beginning of this month. But resident groups said yesterday that the landfill is still operating along with two quarries also located in the area, which the ministry has designated as being of archaeological interest. «These activities should have stopped on August 1, in accordance with three Culture Ministry decisions,» Dimitris Helmis, the head of the residents’ campaign, told Kathimerini.
