Thursday UN agencies and representatives of regional governments meet in Piraeus to agree on a common strategy to address the pollution currently affecting the marine environment adjacent to the Lebanese and Syrian coasts due to the oil spill in mid-July. Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis is due to host the meeting. European Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas will also attend the meeting. The council of Kokkinia, in co-operation with the town’s resistance organization, holds a three-day celebration in the honor and memory of the war casualties in 1944.
