Volos split over rotten shipment of bananas

A row broke out yesterday over how to dispose of 2,000 tons of South American bananas that are rotting aboard a cargo ship that has been docked in Volos, central Greece, since Monday. The local mayoral council has approved the transfer of the fruit to a nearby landfill but residents who live close to the site in Efxinoupolis have opposed the plan and have begun collecting signatures for a petition to stop the dumping of the bananas. Residents say that the landfill is illegal and dumping the load there would harm the local environment. The vessel was carrying the fruit from Ecuador to Turkey but was forced to dock at Volos after its refrigerated units, in which the bananas were being stored, broke down. However, the fruit soon rotted and the captain wants to dump the cargo so his vessel can again set sail.
