Education row heads to Thessaloniki Fair

As university students prepare to launch their next round of protest action against proposed education reforms next month, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis reiterated yesterday the government’s commitment to making changes to the tertiary sector. Professor Thanos Veremis of Athens University, who headed up a government-appointed panel of academics that put together the recommended changes, said after a meeting with Karamanlis that talks with all parties affected will continue on the proposed changes. The prime minister is decisively pushing ahead with the reforms, said Veremis. Meanwhile, students and university staff said yesterday that they are preparing to launch their next round of demonstrations against reform plans at the Thessaloniki International Fair on September 9.
