Two men shot in ‘gang war’

Two men were shot dead in western Athens on Saturday night in what police believe was a gangland hit. A gunman wearing a baseball cap walked up to two men outside a cafe in Peristeri just before 10 p.m. and opened fire, police said. He repeatedly shot 43-year-old Constantinos Koutelieris as the victim tried to run for cover, hitting him in the head and chest several times. The attacker also shot 36-year-old Yiannis Katsios in the stomach. Katsios died from his injuries soon afterward. The gunman ran off after the shooting. Police said that Koutelieris was known to them as he had been linked to several robberies and other offenses over the last few years. Officers believe he was a gang member. However, the police did not have any record on Katsios.
