Left-wing group owns up to Piraeus bomb

A left-wing extremist group calling itself Revolutionary Brigade claimed responsibility on Saturday for a homemade explosive device that went off in the port of Piraeus earlier in the day. An unknown man called two television stations and said that he had placed the device made up of gas canisters in protest at the death of a sailor in the port earlier in the week. On Tuesday, a 30-year-old sailor was killed after being run over by a truck disembarking from a vessel. A police patrol on Saturday at about 11.30 a.m. spotted smoke coming from a travel bag, which had been placed on a bench near the Miaouli dock, and were able to block off the area before two small gas cylinders in the bag exploded. Two other cylinders in the sack did not explode. No one was hurt in the incident.
