Treasure hunters’ school dig a letdown
The excavation of an old school near Trikala in central Greece, prompted by four citizens chasing rumors about treasure buried at the site, has yielded nothing of value, authorities said yesterday. Digging at the old primary school in Asproklissia, in the municipality of Chassia, began yesterday after the four unidentified treasure hunters had an application to excavate approved. A crowd of locals gathered at the site to see whether rumors of a buried treasure at the site, which have circulated for 40 years, would be verified. «At last the matter has been closed and we can all calm down,» Chassia Mayor Vassilis Papaefthymiou said. Work to repair the damage wreaked upon the old school by the dig – to be funded by a 3,000-euro guarantee put down by the four treasure hunters – got under way yesterday.
