Police seize cannabis trees from river islet

A ring of traders believed to have been cultivating large quantities of cannabis on a river islet in Serres has been broken, police said on Saturday after arresting four men and a woman. Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Serres anti-narcotics unit detained a 55-year-old man in the northern prefecture after allegedly finding large quantities of cannabis in his possession. They then arrested two more men, aged 50 and 70, and a woman, aged 27, in Thessaloniki as well as a 57-year-old man in Halkidiki. Officers subsequently uprooted 780 cannabis trees – some up to 4 meters tall – from a small islet in the Axios River. The trees were confiscated along with 12,200 euros, believed to be the proceeds of drug deals. All five suspected ring members are to appear before an investigative magistrate today.
