Disabled in for payout switch
The first stage of a draft bill introducing changes to the way disability pensions are classified is expected to be ready by the end of the year in a move that will help the government crack down on illegal claims, Health Ministry sources said yesterday. The government is preparing a system that will keep a closer eye on who receives disability payments and will also provide recipients with an electronic card aimed at simplifying their dealings with the state. The Institute of Social Protection and Solidarity (IKPA) has proposed the setting up of review centers at hospitals across Greece where specifically appointed doctors will assess the validity of each claim. According to the Health Ministry, more than 100,000 recipients of disability pensions may be receiving the aid illegally.
