A 90-year-old woman was squashed to death by a piece of furniture in an elevator in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, police said yesterday. The woman was moving the furniture from her home to a nearby apartment block on her own, police said, without clarifying what sort of item was involved. She is then believed to have got stuck in the lift between the ground and first floor. During this time, the furniture item somehow fell against her chest, killing her, police said. Firefighters were notified to help rescue the woman but she was already dead when they arrived, authorities added. An investigation has been launched into the causes of the accident by local police.
