Accountant fudged tax forms for his own gain
An accountant working from home has been arrested in Athens accused of submitting false tax returns on behalf of his clients in order to earn for himself the income tax refund, police said on Saturday. Without the consent of his customers, the suspect, aged 36, is believed to have filed the tax returns via the Taxisnet system and used the respective income tax clearing note to secure consumer loans from banks. A 30-year-old Moldavan woman has also been arrested, believed to have knowingly had her false tax return submitted. «An investigation was begun after we received reports from taxpayers and the Finance Ministry,» a police source said. Following a search of the man’s home, police found two laptop computers and files containing the personal details of some 40 taxpayers.
