Meeting aims to end strike

Primary and preschool teachers are set to meet with Education Minister Marietta Giannakou today in a bid to hammer out a deal that may end their five-week strike action. The Greek Primary School Teachers’ Federation (DOE) along with the Federation of Secondary School Teachers (OLME) requested the meeting on Friday in the first sign of a truce between the government and the teachers. The ministry decided to meet with the teachers even though it had previously insisted that talks could only resume if teachers returned to work. Minister of State Theodoros Roussopoulos said yesterday the government will not agree to the 45 percent pay hike the teachers are seeking. The outcome of today’s meeting will largely determine whether secondary and university students will resume their own protests.
