Some of the abandoned train carriages in Thessaloniki that will be auctioned off by the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) to buyers interested in using them for more innovative purposes, such as holiday homes. There has been a rise in demand for the second-hand carriages from property owners that are interested in living in them rather than building a more costly home. Specialized companies undertake the refurbishment of the carriages that traveled around Greece and Europe 30 to 40 years ago, equipping them with kitchen, bathroom and other home comforts. The cost for a ready-to-live-in carriage exceeds 10,000 euros.
