Salonica police reel in high-stake card sharks

Four people were arrested after officers broke up their illegal card game in Thessaloniki where the players were gambling a total of almost 200,000 euros, police said yesterday. Officers from the illegal gambling division of the Thessaloniki police made the arrests after raiding a cafe in the city. Two men who were working in the cafe were also detained for allowing the game to take place and for allegedly obstructing the officers. «It has been many years since I saw such large amounts of money on a card table,» said Stergios Apostolidis, Thessaloniki’s chief of police. The four card players, who were not publicly identified, had bet some 25,000 euros in cash, 75,000 euros in bills of exchange, 20,000 euros in checks and 76,000 euros’ worth of gambling chips.
