Man loses his legs in discarded missile blast

A man lost both of his legs in an explosion on Saturday after he set fire to a pile of scrap metal in a Roma settlement in central Greece without knowing that an air force missile had been dumped in with the other trash, police said. The unnamed 43-year-old man, a Roma, or Gypsy, was injured when the missile exploded and ripped through the shack he lived in near the village of Pelasgia in Fthiotida. No one else was injured in the incident. The man was taken to the hospital in Lamia, where doctors amputated his legs. It is not clear how the missile ended up in the garbage and the matter is being investigated by the anti-terrorist squad along with officers from the Greek army. Details about the missile were not made public.
