Firefighters staged a symbolic funeral procession yesterday as they demonstrated in central Athens calling for their temporary employment contracts to be turned into permanent staff jobs. Scuffles broke out when riot police stopped the group of 800 protesters from storming the Interior Ministry to take their demand to Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Riot police responded by firing tear gas on the firefighters. Police blocked the streets in the center of Athens for several hours due to the demonstration, as firefighters then marched to Parliament to hand in a petition.
