Officers kill suspect in robbery

Two policemen have been remanded in custody after shooting dead a suspected thief near Drama in northern Greece after he allegedly aimed a toy gun at them, authorities said yesterday. The two officers, who have not been named, shot a 35-year-old man who had allegedly been trying to steal electrical equipment from a farming depot in the area of Kalambaki. The unnamed man and five others drove into the depot with a 4×4 vehicle and a truck equipped with a crane. A police patrol spotted the men but when the officers got closer, five of the suspects jumped into the truck and drove off. Police said that the 35-year-old drove the 4×4 at the officers while brandishing a gun, which was later found to be a plastic toy. The officers allegedly fired at the oncoming vehicle six times. One bullet hit the driver in the back of his right shoulder and killed him instantly. Two of the five suspects were later arrested in Thessaloniki. Meanwhile, police said they are conducting an internal investigation into the shooting.
