An Athenian enjoys the sunshine yesterday on one of the beaches in the southern suburbs of the city. The temperature reached as high as 17C (62.6F) in Athens yesterday. Although a period of warm weather in January is traditionally known as the Halcyon Days in Greece, other European countries have been feeling the effect of the unseasonable temperatures, which experts believe are being caused by global warming.
