Flashy jewel thieves give themselves away

Three suspected burglars from Romania gave themselves away to authorities on a visit to their homeland after they showed off jewelry worth 55,000 euros which they had stolen in Hania, Crete, police said yesterday. The three men have been arrested and officers are looking for another two suspects connected to the gang, which allegedly stole almost 140,000 euros’ worth of jewelry, mobile phones and other electrical goods from three stores in Hania over the last three months. Officers caught the three suspects red-handed as they were trying to break into another store. They had been tipped off about the gang’s activities after Romanian police informed Interpol that the trio had spent large amounts of cash and had shown off the stolen jewelry to friends in Romania. Police said they have not recovered the stolen items.
