Presidential guard…

Members of Greece’s presidential guard march in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Parliament Square in central Athens yesterday. The 70-year-old marble cenotaph, which is outside Parliament, is to undergo extensive restoration after a chunk of stone fell off last year. The monument was designed by architect Emmanouil Lazaridis and the central image of the naked, lifeless soldier was created by the sculptor Fokion Rok. Writings from the funeral oration of the ancient Greek leader Pericles, as related by the historian Thucydides, are engraved on the wall around the dead soldier.
