Three arrested for baby sale

A 56-year-old lawyer from Attica was charged on Saturday with helping a Gypsy couple sell their baby to an illegal adoption ring, police said. The 19-year-old Gypsy man and his 29-year-old female partner were also arrested and officers said they are looking for another woman, aged 31, who is thought to be the woman’s sister-in-law. Police said the baby was born at a state hospital on January 15 but instead of being registered to the mother, the woman’s sister-in-law registered it as her own child. This prompted authorities to investigate the matter. According to officers, the child’s mother and the lawyer had made some 9,000 euros in the past from putting two of the young woman’s babies up for illegal adoption. Police said the mother was given 200 euros and the remaining money went to the lawyer. It was not clear whether the women had been arrested or charged for these alleged crimes. None of the suspects were named.
