Customers hit stores in sunny start to sales

Shoppers poured onto Athens’s streets yesterday, on the first day of the winter sales season, with the sunny weather stirring interest in less wintery clothes, retailers said. Store owners were satisfied with the increased customer traffic but many pointed out that consumers were mostly browsing yesterday since they have up until February 25 to take advantage of the lower prices. «Yesterday was like the good old days with more traffic in shoe and clothing stores,» said Dimitris Armenakis, president of the National Confederation of Greek Commerce (ESEE), the merchants’ association. «Due to the unusually good weather conditions, consumers are showing interest in lighter garments and not heavier winter clothing, such as coats,» added Armenakis.
