China, Greece discuss ports

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and visiting Chinese state councillor Hua Jianmin yesterday discussed the privatization of the port of Piraeus during their talks regarding plans to boost bilateral cooperation in shipping, commerce and culture. «Greek ports offer huge business opportunities as cargo hubs for Chinese products to Europe and the southeastern Mediterranean,» Bakoyannis said. Hua stressed that China regarded Greece as a «strategic partner» but did not mention the port of Piraeus in comments to reporters. According to Reuters, a large Chinese shipping firm is reportedly in talks to buy part of the Piraeus Port Authority in order to improve its access to European markets. Bakoyannis also highlighted Greece’s interest in increasing exports to the Chinese market.
