ATTEMPTED RAPE

Woman, 73, shot during assault Police were searching yesterday for a 35-year-old man in the area of Grevena, northern Greece, accused of attempting to rape of a 73-year-old woman. The suspect is believed to have entered the victim’s house and beaten her husband before tying him up. Police said the man then attempted to rape the woman when his hunting rifle went off, injuring the victim’s knee. The elderly couple were taken to a nearby hospital after the suspect fled. ATM fraud Police believe they have broken an international ring that allegedly used electronic devices to copy PIN numbers inserted into bank ATMs in order to withdraw hundreds of thousands of euros from customers’ bank accounts. Police, who arrested a 26-year-old Romanian in Athens over the weekend, believe the ring comprises mostly Romanians. The ring is believed to have stolen 450,000 euros from just one bank in Athens over the past six months, police said. Missing migrants Rescue workers said yesterday that hopes were fading in efforts to find the 12 remaining illegal immigrants who disappeared after their boat sunk off the Aegean island of Samos last Friday. The bodies of seven of the 19 illegal immigrants who had been aboard the boat were found washed up on the island over the weekend. The migrants had attempted to cross over into Greece from Turkey but their boat sunk about a nautical mile off the island due to gale-force winds. Cannabis found Two Albanian nationals were arrested in Ioannina, northwestern Greece, yesterday after police found in their possession three sacks of cannabis. The two suspects are believed to have picked up the cannabis from the Albanian border and were caught transporting the narcotics to a third man who had been destined to collect the sacks. Champions League Tickets for the Champions League soccer final went on sale yesterday with prices ranging from 80 euros to 100 euros. Only 9,000 tickets will be available to the general public and just over half of those allocated to Greeks, who will have to enter an Internet lottery to secure a seat at the Olympic Stadium on May 23. Another 34,000 tickets will be distributed to supporters of the two clubs who will play in the final. Armed holdup A 29-year-old man was arrested in Thessaloniki yesterday accused of holding up an Internet cafe in the Kordelio area. Police said the suspect allegedly took 2,000 euros in the heist.
