Armored van robbers make carjack getaway

Despite being chased and knocked off their motorbikes by their victims, four armed robbers managed to escape in a hijacked car with the proceeds of an armored van holdup in central Athens yesterday afternoon. By late yesterday, it was still unclear how much money was inside the metal box stolen from a private security firm’s van carrying cash from the OTE state telecom office, at the junction of Palama and Patission streets in central Athens, to the bank. As the van was about to leave, two armed men forced the guards to hand them the box, and tried to escape on two motorbikes driven by their accomplices. The guards gave chase in their armored van, and managed to knock down both motorbikes further down Patission Avenue. At that point, the robbers, who were unhurt, started to shoot, forcing the guards to retreat. They then forced a passing driver to give them his car and made their final escape.
