Spaniard: Greek system ‘soul destroying’

Juan Rafael Ventura Alvarez is from Valencia, Spain, and has been in Athens since September with the Erasmus program. Asked to recount his experience of Greek university, which he encountered when tertiary education was already in a state of upheaval, he says: «I want to stress that my experience in general as an Erasmus student in Athens has been exceptional. But the academic experience was the black part. The university was closed almost every day, and when it opened we couldn’t find what we needed. «I don’t think it is the strikes that are the problem, but the inability of the system and some of its functionaries. I’ve seen friends from Erasmus crying in the corridors. We feel impotent; we can’t do anything except wait. It’s soul destroying.»
