AIDS fear for rape suspect
Authorities fear that a 31-year-old man who allegedly repeatedly raped a 13-year-old student on the eastern Aegean island of Mytilene is an AIDS carrier. The suspect, who works as a gravedigger, has been remanded in custody and local social services believe that he has been receiving treatment for being HIV positive. «Formally, we have not been informed of whether he is a carrier of the virus or not. The information that has leaked from social services regarding the medical treatment he is receiving appears to confirm this rumor,» Mytilene Police Chief Giorgos Tseridis told Kathimerini. According to sources, medical tests have confirmed that the suspect’s wife also suffers from AIDS. The victim, who originally told police that she was in a relationship with the suspect, changed her version of events yesterday and claimed that she never consented to having sex with him.
