Pensioners…

Pensioners are pictured protesting outside the Economy Ministry in central Athens, yesterday. Protesters were calling for their monthly pensions to be increased to 1,050 euros, for an annual heating supplement of 500 euros, free medicines, an exemption from VAT on retail goods and an income tax-free ceiling of 15,000 euros. A delegation of the protesters met with Economy Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis to discuss their demands. Alogoskoufis reportedly pledged to make what improvements he could for them within the constraints of the national budget but did not make any specific commitments. Similar demonstrations were held yesterday by pensioners in the cities of Thessaloniki, Preveza and Larissa.
