Regrets for notorious robber
Greece’s most wanted robber, Nikos Palaiocostas, admitted yesterday that he regretted some of his actions as a court in Athens sentenced him to 16 years and six months in jail for two of the dozens of robberies he is accused of carrying out. «I regret some things but not others,» 46-year-old Palaiocostas told the criminal court. «When you break the law once, you get into that way of life.» Palaiocostas had been on the run from authorities for almost 15 years, during which he allegedly continued to carry out a series of robberies as he evaded authorities several times. Yesterday’s conviction relates to two bank robberies in Sparta and Megalopolis, in the Peloponnese, in 1989 and 2004 respectively. The court decided that the statute of limitations applied to two other thefts in Argos and Tripolis. Palaiocostas said he had to rob banks to ensure he had enough funds to remain on the run from authorities. The convicted robber still has to stand trial for a number of other raids.
