Weapons, drug stash found

Two men and a woman were arrested after police found more than a dozen firearms and large quantities of narcotics hidden in three apartments in southern Athens, authorities said yesterday while revealing that one of the suspects has already escaped. A raid on apartments in Kallithea, Nea Smyrni and Koukaki last week uncovered three submachine guns, 11 pistols and a handgun that had been smuggled into Greece hidden in rice sacks. The drug haul included 1.2 kilos of cocaine and 1,189 LSD pills. Police said the narcotics had been hidden in sealed cans of mushrooms, indicating they had been packed and shipped by a source in South America. The two male suspects, aged 32 and 28, and 29-year-old woman had been under surveillance for two months in an operation also involving foreign authorities. However, the 32-year-old male suspect escaped from a police escort on Sunday when he was taken to an Athens hospital pretending to have fallen ill from drug withdrawal.
