New scheme to corner dangerous drivers
Authorities warned drivers yesterday that an electronic system to log traffic offenses and penalty points will be up and running in time for stiffer fines to come into effect on June 3. Traffic police said that the software that will run the electronic system is to be installed at their headquarters next month. As of June 3, drivers who collect 25 penalty points will have their licenses revoked for a minimum of six months. After that period, they will have to take at least 10 driving lessons and sit a driving test. Any points collected by the drivers will be wiped off their records after three years. Among the new driving offenses that will be introduced this summer is parking in a space for disabled people, which will be punishable with nine points and a fine of between 75 and 150 euros.
