Underground Free University

The Underground Free University is on Valtetsiou Street in Exarchia, in the basement of the building which houses the Migrants’ Rights Center. The simple space contains scores of gutted computers that are recycled for educational or artistic purposes if they can’t be reassembled for people who cannot afford to buy a computer. The space was initially set up as an Internet venue for migrants and others who could not afford access. Then came the idea of exchanging knowledge and lessons began in 2005. Most of the participants are migrants that are already learning Greek at the center upstairs. The lessons cover both basic and advanced computer skills. They take place every evening, and are offered gratis by volunteers. The Greek lessons, taught since 1999 by volunteer teachers, were an initiative of the Social and Political Rights Network. Cost: Free. Duration: Around two months. For info, log on to http://ufu.gr.
