University students eye UK

Teacher strike action and students shutting down university faculties have resulted in a growing number of locals looking into completing their tertiary studies in Britain, according to the British Council in Athens. «Those interested are first- and second-year students at Greek universities who are looking into swapping over to a British university due to their studies being disrupted,» said Costis Georgiou, education projects manager at the British Council. According to the data, there has been a 15 to 20 percent increase in the interest being shown in British courses this month. Greeks make up the second-largest foreign university student community in Britain after the Chinese. Some 20,000 Greeks follow a tertiary course, with the majority (13,000) in postgraduate studies versus 35,000 students from China. Greeks prefer universities in the country’s south despite the higher costs of living over other parts of Britain. Additionally, Greeks normally prefer to complete business and economics studies and engineering courses.
