Court allows new landfill

Athens’s waste disposal problems moved a step closer to being solved yesterday as the Council of State rejected objections from residents and local officials of Ano Liosia, western Athens, to plans to build a new landfill next to the area’s existing dump. Greece’s highest administrative court ruled that the project could go ahead because authorities had carried out an in-depth survey to make sure that the area of Fyli, near Ano Liosia, could support another dump. Objectors had also complained that the area where the new dump is to be located is considered a forested area. However, the court decided that this could be overlooked if the matter is of «special public interest.» The government has been hampered in its efforts to build three new dumps in Attica due to legal action by local politicians and residents.
