Obese Greeks, fattest in Europe
Americans consume an average 3,774 calories per person per day: – Thirty-two percent of men in the USA and 37.8 percent of women are obese; 72.2 percent of men and 69.8 percent of women are overweight. – The USA ranks top in meat consumption – every person consumes about 274.56 kilos of meat a year. – It is estimated that by 2030, all the children in the USA will be considered obese and the cost of treatment and health complications will be 8 percent of total health costs. The annual economic costs of obesity on the country is estimated at 100 billion dollars. Greeks rank top in obesity in the whole of Europe: – Some 26 percent of men and 18 percent of women are obese. Four in 10 Greeks, men and women, are overweight. One in three Greek women aged over 35 is overweight. – In this country 22.2 percent of primary and junior high school children are overweight.
