Park protest ends with three arrests

Riot police arrested three people at Pedion tou Areos, one of Athens’s largest parks, yesterday morning after being called in to quell a protest by a group of local residents who object to the presence of a sports club in the park. The residents smashed pavement stones around the Panellinios sports club and attempted to plant trees in protest against what they claim is illegal expansion by the club. Panellinios, one of Greece’s oldest clubs, has been based in the area since 1895 but some residents claim that the town-planning office has ruled that the sports club has illegally encroached on parkland. The three people arrested are to be charged today with civil disobedience and damaging property. Other residents who took part in the protest gathered outside the Kypseli police station to demand the three’s release.
