Blast damages club, police seek owner

An explosion caused by a large quantity of dynamite injured one man and caused extensive damage to a nightspot in Petralona, southern Athens, yesterday in an attack police believe is linked to gangs running protection rackets. The explosion took place at 1.40 a.m. and created a large hole in one side of the nightclub, at the point where the homemade explosive device had been placed. The club was shut at the time of the explosion but a 63-year-old security guard on the premises was slightly injured. Police said that the nightclub owner is wanted by authorities in connection with a number of counts of extortion. The owner is believed to have made a number of enemies, which makes it difficult to speculate who may behind the attack, a source added.
