Red light for street racers in Neo Faliron

A midnight police operation against illegal drag races in the coastal suburb of Neo Faliron led to 45 people being detained, according to police, who were responding to residents’ complaints about noise and dangerous driving. Riot police first blocked off access roads to the area around the Peace and Friendship Stadium where the drag racers usually convene shortly before midnight on Thursday. Officers then moved in to detain suspects. One of the 45 was charged with possession of a weapon after a can of CS spray was found on him. Another 20 suspects were charged with driving without a license. Five more were charged for not having their vehicles insured. The remaining suspects were released. Police pledged to continue monitoring the area after residents expressed fears that passers-by could be injured or killed as a result of the illegal street racing.
