Two new university bills loom

The government is to unveil two new pieces of proposed legislation relating to postgraduate degrees and university research over the next few weeks, Education Minister Marietta Giannakou has told Kathimerini. The first bill, providing for the introduction of fees for postgraduate degrees, is expected to spark fresh protests among university students when it is tabled in Parliament. The bill also plans to grant technical colleges the right to offer postgraduate degrees. The funds collected from the fees will be used to meet universities’ operational demands and salaries. The second piece of legislation aims to strengthen transparency in the management of funds allocated to state universities for research purposes. «From now on, all research funds will be distributed subject to the evaluation of universities,» Giannakou said. According to government sources, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis asked Giannakou to push through the two new bills to show that the government was making bold moves and had not been paralyzed by the recent pension fund scandal.
