Charges to be filed this week

Charges are expected to be brought early this week against about eight suspects believed to have taken part in a mass brawl between rival groups of fans last month that left one man dead, sources said yesterday. Three prosecutors met at police headquarters in central Athens yesterday to prepare the issue of arrest warrants, sources added. Meanwhile, local press reported yesterday that one of the suspects, a 27-year-old man, had confessed to actively taking part in the killing of the 22-year-old fan in Paeania, northeast of Athens. The suspect told police that he struck the victim with an iron bar while three others stabbed him. The three men alleged to have attacked the victim with knives were not named. Most of the suspects involved in the brawl, in which some 500 fans took part, are linked to supporters’ clubs.
