Talks resume on education

As the country’s universities reopened yesterday, students started making up for weeks of lessons lost during three months of protest action. Meanwhile, the Federation of University Teachers’ Federations (POSDEP) called for a rally in Athens on Thursday to protest reforms to university education. Also on Thursday, the federation’s executive committee is to discuss two new pieces of proposed legislation for universities; the first foresees the introduction of fees for postgraduate degrees, while the second links the allocation of research funds to university evaluation. The committee will also assess the mood in university senates, which will implement the new laws. The reforms are to be discussed on Friday by university deans during a conference in Kastoria which is to be attended by Education Minister Marietta Giannakou.
