Trash removed from Kifissos
Volunteers yesterday helped clear from part of the Kifissos River in northern Athens more than 180 tons of rubble and garbage allegedly dumped there at nighttime by various firms in the area. In an initiative organized by Kathimerini, Skai TV and Radio and the Karcher cleaning company, the rubbish was removed with the help of bulldozers from a section of the river that meets the Helidonous stream. «Residents are beginning to realize that the Kifissos is not a sewer but a living river,» said Dinos Laskaris, the head of a body responsible for managing the Kifissos. «I am hopeful that after decade of indifference and illegal activity, the Kifissos is coming out of the obscurity certain interests had condemned it to.» Another effort to clean up the river is going to be made this Sunday in the Adames area, near Nea Kifissia.
