Jewelry angler and bank robber netted

Policemen on patrol in the center of Thessaloniki early yesterday caught a 35-year-old man trying to fish gold rings and chains out of a locked jewelry store with a piece of wire, police said. The suspected robber was using a piece of flexible wire, which he had squeezed through a gap between the entrance and the shop window, to try and hook the jewelry and pull it out of the store. He was also carrying other tools that could have been used in a break-in. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man was arrested in Patras yesterday after he allegedly held up a branch of the National Bank wearing white overalls of the type worn by forensic officers and surgical rubber gloves. The suspect stole 12,000 euros but was caught after changing into regular clothes in an abandoned house near the bank. Neither of the suspects was named.
