Minister turns on own force
Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras yesterday risked further damaging his relationship with the counterterrorism squad when he suggested that senior officers were compiling jumbled reports in a deliberate attempt to mislead him. Polydoras was responding to a newspaper report quoting sources in the counterterrorism squad who suggested that they had informed Polydoras that the Revolutionary Struggle extremist group would target Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis and the US Embassy in Athens before the strikes happened. Polydoras struck back by blasting the quality of information he receives from officers. «From time to time, I receive – from the so-called senior officers – notes that they like to call reports,» he said. The squabble comes two weeks after a senior counterterrorism squad officer resigned amid criticism from the Public Order Ministry, which blamed him for not preventing a missile strike on the US Embassy in January.
