Probe into university violence

The senate of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University yesterday condemned «with revulsion» a violent attack on a professor outside the university premises earlier this month, though the institution’s dean insisted that there was no general problem with safety at the university. According to dean Anastassios Manthos, the attack, which resulted in the unnamed professor suffering concussion, internal bleeding in his ear and a pierced eardrum, was «an isolated incident.» An investigation has been launched to determine the identity of the perpetrator, Manthos told Kathimerini. The professor was attacked outside the university’s mathematics faculty as he was locking its door on the night of May 10. He was kicked and punched by an unidentified assailant for reasons that remain unclear. The attacker fled after being spotted by students. Meanwhile, it was revealed that a letter written by another professor at the same university alleges that drugs are being freely traded and used within the university premises. The letter has been forwarded to a local prosecutor.
