A civil servant union (ADEDY) official shouts for calm during scuffles with riot police outside the Finance Ministry at the end of an ADEDY demonstration in Athens. The union staged a 24-hour strike to protest against proposed reforms to Greece’s ailing social security system. Yesterday, ADEDY chairman Spyros Papaspyrou resigned from the ruling Socialist party’s trade unionist secretariat, to protest at criticism of his positions by government officials and Socialist-affiliated unionists.
