Greece leads Euro 2008 race

Greece beat Hungary 2-0 at home on Saturday to grab top spot in Group C of the Euro 2008 qualifying round after Turkey, the previous front-runner, lost 3-2 away to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The European champions, eager to reach the finals after missing last summer’s World Cup, lead the group with 15 points. Turkey is second on 13 points, three ahead of the Bosnians and Norway. The winner and runner-up qualify. Fanis Gekas opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Twelve minutes later, Yiourkas Seitaridis capped off a stylish run to score Greece’s second goal. The game was played at the Pankritio stadium on Crete after UEFA ordered Greece to play two home qualifiers away from Athens because of crowd trouble during its 4-1 defeat by Turkey in Athens last March. Greece hosts last-placed Moldova on Wednesday, also on Crete.
