Otto’s cool room

It was not only the trees in the National Garden that suffered from official indifference. One of the biggest mistakes, according to horticulturalist Nikolaos Tambakis, was to turn the cool room built for King Otto into public conveniences. «It is a little building in the center of the garden which has a long history. It was a cool room for the palace, and it was filled with snow brought down from Mount Parnitha. There were no refrigerators in those days, not even iceboxes. Did it have to become toilets?»
