Russian mob boss caught

A suspected mobster who is wanted in Russia for crimes, including murder, extortion and the trafficking of arms and explosives, was arrested in Thessaloniki on Saturday, police said. The Georgian-born man, who was not named by authorities, is due to appear before a prosecutor on suspicion of being one of the founders of the Kvartal criminal gang in the city of Kazan in 1997. He is thought to have been responsible for the death of a rival gang boss in the city in 2004. Russian authorities issued an international arrest warrant for the alleged gangster in November 2005. However, Agence France-Presse quoted police sources yesterday as saying that the suspect’s extradition to Russia could be complicated because he holds Greek citizenship.
