Archbishop test results awaited

Archbishop Christodoulos issued a statement yesterday thanking people for the «love and support» they have offered him as he continues to be treated in the intensive-care unit at the Aretaion Hospital in Athens. «With the help of the doctors and, above all, God… I hope to be able to soon embrace each of you,» Christodoulos’s statement read. The head of the Church of Greece underwent surgery for an intestinal problem last week but doctors also discovered a problem with his liver and are awaiting the results of tests, including a biopsy, today. Samples of the archbishop’s liver and intestine have been sent to laboratories in London, Paris and Miami for the tests. President Karolos Papoulias visited the archbishop yesterday but said he felt too emotional to make any comments to journalists when he left the hospital.
